Since it's the End of the blog...

I created a new blog called "the Road to CrossFit"..hehe..get it Road to Cross...Fit..Ok i'm corny just wanted to continue on with progress and daily WOD's. You guys are more than welcome to join in and used it as a Work-out/Food Journal to keep each other motivated!!

Remember most of us have kids now and ALL of us are not getting any younger, we need to stay healthy and strong plus looking pretty good is darn good side effect. The next goal is to be FIT for LIFE!!! Good Luck guys and Thanks to everyone that participated and I look forward seeing you on "The Road to CrossFit"....

Study: Belly bulge can be deadly for older adults

If your pants are feeling a bit tight around the waistline, take note: Belly bulge can be deadly for older adults, even those who aren't overweight or obese by other measures.

One of the largest studies to examine the dangers of abdominal fat suggests men and women with the biggest waistlines have twice the risk of dying over a decade compared to those with the smallest tummies.

Surprisingly, bigger waists carry a greater risk of death even for people whose weight is "normal" by the body mass index, or BMI, a standard measure based on weight and height.

"Even if you haven't had a noticeable weight gain, if you notice your waist size increasing that's an important sign," said lead author Eric Jacobs of theAmerican Cancer Society, which funded the study. "It's time to eat better and start exercising more."

Other research has linked waist size to dementia, heart disease, asthmaand breast cancer.

Bulging bellies are a problem for most Americans older than 50. It's estimated that more than half of older men and more than 70 percent of older women have bigger waistlines than recommended. And it's a growing problem: Average waistlines have expanded by about an inch per decade since the 1960s.

To check your girth, wrap a tape measure around your waist at the navel. No fair sucking in your bulge. Men should have a waist circumference no larger than 40 inches. For women, the limit is 35 inches.

The new study, appearing in Monday's Archives of Internal Medicine, is the first to analyze waist size and deaths for people in three BMI categories: normal,overweight and obese. In all three groups, waist size was linked to higher risk.

About 2 percent of people in the study had normal BMI numbers but larger than recommended waists. Jacobs said the risk increased progressively with increasing waist size, even at waist sizes well below what might be considered too large.

The study used data from more than 100,000 people who were followed from 1997 to 2006. Nearly 15,000 people died during that time.

The researchers crunched numbers on waist circumference, height and weight to draw conclusions about who was more likely to die. Study participants measured their own waists, so some honest mistakes and wishful fudging could have been included, the authors acknowledged.

Four extra inches around the waist increased the risk of dying from between 15 percent to 25 percent. Oddly, the strongest link — 25 percent — was in women with normal BMI.

People with bigger waists had a higher risk of death from causes including respiratory illnesses, heart disease and cancer.

The study was observational, a less rigorous approach that means the deaths could have been caused by factors other than waist size. But the researchers did take into account other risk factors for poor health, such as smoking and alcohol use.

Some older adults gain belly fat while they lose muscle mass, Jacobs said, so while they may not be getting heavier, they're changing shape — and that's taking a toll.

A tape measure, or a belt that doesn't buckle the way it used to, "may tell you things your scale doesn't," Jacobs said.

Fat stored behind the abdominal wall may be more harmful than fat stored on the hips and thighs. Some scientists believe belly fat secretes proteins and hormones that contribute to inflammation, interfere with how the body processes insulinand raise cholesterol levels.

But Dr. Samuel Klein, an obesity expert at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, is skeptical about that theory. Removing belly fat surgically doesn't lead to health improvements. That may mean it's simply a stand-in for some other culprit that is causing both belly fat and poor health. Klein wasn't involved in the new research. Klein said the new study, while showing a link between waist size and mortality, doesn't pinpoint exactly how much belly fat is dangerous for normal, overweight and obese people. The 40-inch for men and 35-inch for women cutoff points are irrelevant for many people, he said. What can be done to fight belly fat? It's the same advice as for losing weight. Eat fewer calories and burn more through walking, bicycling and other aerobic exercise. "Sit-ups are useless," Klein said. ___ Online: Archives: http://www.archinternmed.com

Another go for "Angie" but this time with full kip pull-ups and also decided to time each individual workout.

RESULTS:

pullups = 21:37
pushups = 5:31
situps = 4:32
squats = 2:49

TOTAL = 34:29 *i think I calculated that right..he..he* NOT BAD!!! My pullups are still slow but I'm surprised with my pushups I think I can pushed faster but those pullups drained me a bit but with my situps I was doing above 5 min before but today I manage to do less than 5 YES!!! and my squats was always been my stronger point. Funny thing about these #'s is that I was expecting it to go up but it was going down as I go further with my workout kinda cool that I was speeding up as I go along.

Hello, Blog...it's me, Margaret (CH 35)

Okay...today is the day, I stop eating like a pig. I stocked up on some groceries, so I'm ready. I think. I have 2 weeks to get back in shape after 2 weeks of laziness and food binges. Plyo today and core.

Okay, I'm an 1/8 into my Plyo workout, and I just had to stop and write this. I feel like crap. I've never felt like this before. Usually, I can get through Plyo with no issues. Flashback to 2 weeks ago, where I would stuff my face in cupcakes and burgers. I was naive enough to think that getting back into the thick of things would be easy. Boy oh boy, where's my dunce cap?? I hope I survive this. Let this be a lesson to all of YOU as I point my imaginary loaf of bread in the air.

Results: 36:26 I added the stairs because the pullup bar is on top of the basement stairs and my treadmill is in the basement it's really 9 rounds of stairs down and 10 up.
TOTAL: 2,000 meters (1.24 miles) /130 steps-up/50 chinups/100 kb swings/ 150 pushups/117 steps-down.

7-2-10 WOD / "TENS"

I named this WOD "TENS"...

WOD:
10 Rounds for Time

10 Pullups
10 Ring dips
10 Situps
10 Squats

Results: 43:48 min SLOOOOOOWWWW...I have to practice more on the rings and pullups both slowed me down big time...plus I can barley lift my arms as I type this blog...my elbows and shoulders are DONE for the weekend!!..lol...I might have over worked the rings for this week. Oh well!! I'm looking forward for tomorrow's REST DAAAAYYYY!!!...

12% Full incline on the treadmill
7 mph

Was pretty easy the first 6 rounds then the last 2 got tougher...I think 7mph is a little slow next will shoot for 8mph...BRING EEEETTTTT!!!!

The workout seemed simple enough but for some reason it took me 21:58 min and had a headache in the second round and threw-up as well...YUCK!!! so I decided to stop because my headache was getting worse, weird...and it sucked i didn't get to finish all the rounds...*argh*

Not a great day celebrating my 33rd B-day sick as a dog yesterday...but thanks to Shil got me motivated again to bring more PAIN!!!..hehe...Kinda weird getting excited with a new weight scale as a b-day present..oh YEAH it's DIGITAL!!..lmao!!!...waiting for my Olympic rings to come soon enough and possibly a 35lbs ketlebells too..ohh man..so excited to get better for more and new workouts!!! Been fighting a head cold since Friday night and been resting for 3 days now and I feel like I should suck it up and go on with my workouts, but a part of me thinks If I do I will just make it worst and my WOD performance will suffer anyway due to the COLD!!..*argh*... kinda hard to get a good enough sleep/rest especially Emma is sick as well...*argh* DAYCARE SUCKS!!!

Anyway just venting out cuz I want to work-out but not feeling 100% and I feel like I will lose all my hard work If I skip one more day...oh well I hope you guys are doing better than me..*argh*

6-18-10 WOD / "MARY' AND COMPANY

Went for timed WOD's didn't do too well with rounds still needs more practice with pull-ups...

1st WOD: "Mary"

AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) in 20 min.
5 Handstand Pushups (modified)
10 Pistols (one legged squats, 5 reps each leg)
15 Pullups (kip)

Results : 5 Rounds (went over a bit over 20 min, still slow with pullups)

2nd WOD:

AMRAP in 12 min.
10 Pushups
15 Situps
20m Walking Lunge

Results: 6 Rounds. Walking lunge is new to my routine it's pretty good and I know my leg muscles will hurt tomorrow and my ARSE!!!

Felt weird had a headache while working-out...I guess i have to skip my afternoon coffee nowadays and plenty of water *argh* ...so my time for my WOD was bit loooong 46:02 *argh*...

Not bad for a "headache" workout...darn headache!!! more oxygen!! plus I think my breathing is out-of-whack...inhaling as suppose to exhaling or vice versa..oh well!!

Practicing my kipping pull-ups today, I keep losing momentum and rhythm...*argh*..i get too excited on doing the darn thing that I over think the movements which causes me to rest and correcting...oh well!! more practice is needed...

Hello, Blog...it's me, Margaret (CH 27)

Two words....BATTLE ROPES!

Went to a free trial session at this place called Krank Fitness in Nutley. Not bad. I feel like I can copy those workouts and just do them at home. But, I do like the added motivation that comes with a group setting...that is, the motivation not to punk out. Highlight of the day: I did 10 regular push-ups on my toes with the proper form (at least I think I did). Count'em 10!! Was soo excited, never had that happen. I usually punk out after 3. Sooo proud of myself, but I didn't realize there was a second set, and I nearly died afterwards...hehehe. Hey, it's the small battles, right? Anyways, we'll see what comes of this, much like my bouldering experiment. Variety is the spice of life...

True story...I only worked out once last week, binge ate this place called Fatty Crab, and sill managed to lose 6 lbs. The catch (drum roll please)...my revamped diet. I'm reading the Jillian Michael's "Master Your Metabolism." I'm eating a lot of organic food...loads of fiber, fruits, veggies. I cannot emphasize enough, F...I...B...E...R. FIBER! FIBER! FIBER! I've never been this regular in my entire life. Eeeekk. Too much information? Sorry, but if Brian Ago can post nakey pics of himself, my regularity shouldn't be a big deal...hehhehe. Now it's time to turn up the heat...my whatamalanes...110 here I come! Circa 2002...HOLA!

Well I managed to lose a few lbs in May. I say it was because I say no to the evil Icecream, soda and no more beer. Weighed in today at 219.5 on my scale. Don't know how that translates to Phil's wacky scale. So if I keep on keepin on I hope to be down to 215 or so by end of June. Question... are tape worms legal? Just kidding!

To Whey or Not to Whey???

So I rested yesterday and again I feel kinda weak and depleted not sure what it is??? But I need to get motivated again...so thinking of gaining more muscle weight this month and run lean as well...hmm kinda lean bulk..if that makes sense, so to WHey or not to WHey??

I feel that I'm not getting too much protein in my diet so maybe Whey protein might help out a bit...then again it will go against my diet of going all natural..*argh*...oh such a dilemma..hahaha!!!

So if you guys have any experience with whey protein please advise..Thanks!...

(1) Run 3.2 miles within 24 minutes - NOT COMPLETED...too lazy

(2) P90X Chest, Shoulders, Tric - NOT COMPLETED...too lazy

5-22-10 WOD / "TABATA"

Rested yesterday hoping to get better #'s for today's WOD but seemed to about even from last time...

WOD:

Tabata = max reps for 20 seconds then rest 10 seconds in 8 Rounds

Jumping Pull-ups = 18/15/13/11/15/11/12/12 = 107
Push-ups = 19/15/10/8/5/6/5/6 = 74
Sit-ups = 9/10/10/9/9/9/8/7 = 71
Squats = 19/19/16/16/15/10/15/16 = 126

Still slow more practice...more practice...more practice...

Am I gaining Muscle Weight or just FAT??

Like Marge, as much MetCon (metabolic conditioning) I do seems like I still gained a few pounds 3-4 lbs to be exact...depending on the day..hehehe...is it because of the food?? or Am I gaining muscles...I like the idea of muscle weight instead...*argh*...my goal is to pass the 160 lbs mark and be in 150's again!! it has been more than 10 somewhat years since I was at 150's...hmmm...

More running???or more metcon??? or Both??? or just focus on the RIGHT Foods??? I know it is the combo of all of the above...just feels a bit depleted today...hmmm...I need some bacon and eggs wrap...that will make me feel better...;P

I hope you guys are feeling and doing better and Hope to see most of you guys this Sunday!!..Time to check out the competition..hahaha!!

Jullian Michales' "Master Your Metabolism Cookbook" compliments of the Lyndhurst Public Library

I don't know how trustworthy she is, but I've been hearing a lot of positive reviews. It can't hurt to read a few chapters to see if it's rubbish or not. Beside, my family needs to find better cooking/eating alternatives. Crispy Pata should not be a staple dish every Tuesday and Thursday.

Decided to push for another WOD for today...

WOD:
1st Work-out

5 rounds Max Reps of Hand Stand Push-Ups (modified)
3 min rest each round
My #'s: 35/25/17/17/15 (better #'s than 2 weeks ago YESSSS!!!!)

2nd Work-out

3 Rounds
30 Parallel Dips (did 10 reps each x 9 limited rest)
20 20lbs Dumbbell Swings
3 min rest each round


3rd Work-out

100 Sit-ups as a Bonus or since I had a Chicken Parm Wedge loaded with cheese at lunch..ohh soo yummy..as a Punishment instead..lol...

Run 8 mph for 1 minute then Run 7 mph for 2 minutes...

That's it...ran my fastest 1 mile in 8 min wooohoo..treadmill offcourse...hehehe

Felt GREAT TODAY!!! Finally FINISHED "ANGIE" in 26:44!!! WOOHOOOO!!! I beat my "QUASI-ANGIE" WOD by 4:10...i guess that's an improvement...for me it is..hahaha!!

I called today's WOD, "Buffet", because it has all the work-out that I DON'T like!!!! I took my time today because I really don't feel like PUKING early in the morning..hahaha!!

WOD: For time

70 Burpees
60 Sit-ups
50 20 lbs Dumbbell Swings
40 Jumping Pull-ups
30 Hanstand Push-ups (modified)

Finished in 29:24 I know it's slow but at least I finished!! WOOHOOO!!!

5-14-10 WOD / HSPU*DB SQUATS*L-PULLUPS

Dear Blog,

I HATE PULL-UPS ESPECIALLY L PULL-UPS!!!! The WOD seemed so simple at first then it hits you with L Pull-ups!!! I could hardly do regular pull-ups...L Pull-ups!!!! anyway...I managed to finished with 21:24...did I mention I hate Pull-UPS!!!

WOD:

7 Rounds for Time
10 Hand Stand Push-ups (modified declined push-ups L shaped)
10 40 lbs (20 lbs. each hand) Dumbbell Squats
10 Jumping L Pull-ups (raised leg in L shape)

hmmm.. I didn't notice at first I should call this WOD the "L"..I hate the "L"!!!!

Feels good today!! I decided to have some carbs (cavatteli with grilled chicken and broccoli rabe) for lunch and it does make a difference in terms of performing WOD...also it depends on the work-out as well..he..he...

WOD:

Warm-up
100 sit-ups

Interval Run
4 Rounds
1 min @ 8.5 mph / 2 min @ 7 mph

Cool-down
3 Rounds
20 Flutter kicks

Overall Time about 20 min Woohoo!!

WHY IS IT SOOO HARD TO START BACK UP AGAIN!?!!??!?! WHY...WHY!?!?! I was a well oiled machine b4 the wedding. Now, I feel like scrap metal...just rusting away. Okay, my start date was suppose to be yesterday. Needless to say, that did not happen. I gained close to 10 lbs these past couple of weeks. You think that would motivate me, but NOPE. Luckily, June trip to Bridgehampton should do the trick. I hope (*gulp*). My plan for today is to run 3.2 miles, then start back up with P90x. Stay tuned...

5-12-10 WOD / "Barbara" kicked my butt Again!!!

The plan was to do Barbara again, 20 pull-ups/30 push-ups/40 sit-ups/50 squats x5, but manage to only do 2 1/2 rounds. In mid sit-up...nausea sets in and to the porcelain gods!!!! YUCK!!

I was doing pretty good with my time average about 6 min per round too so I was excited I was going to beat my first time with "Barbara"...lol, but She won again!!! I might be down today but the WAR is NOT OVER!!! *grrrr**

Overall I did 60 pull-ups/90 push-ups/80 sit-ups/100 squats, still not too bad in 12 min. but not good enough...

I think I had a bad fish for lunch that made me throw up though...was not feeling good after lunch, also I think REST is the Key to kicking Barbara's Butt!!! didn't sleep too well last night..I know..excuses...excuses...*grrr*
